Praying Over Deacon

These past couple months the Lord has put it on my heart to begin intentionally praying over Deacon and the man he will become. Prayers for his heart, his passions, his future and his character. Though I know my prayers for him will change in some ways as he grows and I begin to know his heart, my desire is to always be interceding for him, throughout his life.

Below are some of the prayers and scriptures that I will be praying over him over the next few weeks, months and years:

1. That God would call him out of his sin and that he would respond in faith.

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. – John 1:12-13

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. – John 10:27-28

2. That his life would be a picture of God’s goodness, faithfulness and grace.

Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. – Philippians 1:27-28

3. That he would be a man of integrity, and that he would pursue purity, humility and righteousness.

So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. – 2 Timothy 2:22

4. That he would love people well.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. – 1 John 4:7

Let all that you do be done in love. – 1 Corinthians 16:14

5. That he would bravely follow after the Lord.

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. – Deut. 31-6

6. That he would be a Christ-like servant.

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. – Philippians 2:3-4

For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. – Galatians 5:13

7. That he would be passionate about God’s Word.

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. Psalm 1:1-2

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

8. That his life would be marked by joy, not merely comfort or happiness.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. – Romans 15:13

I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. – Psalm 16:8-9

9. That he would marry a godly woman and lead his family in righteousness and love.

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her – Ephesians 5:25

Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? – 1 Timothy 3:2-5

10. That he would be used by God for His kingdom purposes.

Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. – Romans 6:13

Six Months of Marriage

Today marks six months of marriage to my beautiful, charming, intelligent, funny and godly wife, Danielle. Here are just a few of the things I’ve discovered over those six months:

-Time speeds up when you’re not alone.

-Watching football all day Saturday and Sunday is not everyone’s idea of fun.

-Married people like to talk about getting together with each other, but it’s not as easy as it sounds.

-If you plan on doing something, you should tell your wife. You share a life, not a brain. (Hard transition for someone who was single for as long as I was.)

-Eating out is twice as expensive.

-People like to ask, “How is married life treating you?”

-Side dishes exist with home cooked meals.

-When one spouse thinks birthdays are a big deal and one doesn’t, the one that thinks they’re a big deal wins.

-Married life is awesome.

-There are too many shades of tan paint.

-There are too many shades of green paint.

a like list (all video edition)

i’ve been much busier than normal with work, school and mission trip preparations. hope to bring you more substance after next week’s mission trip, but if you need a break from discussing rob bell… here i am!

and here’s a quick list of trivial things that i like:

the dart guy from this dating site commercial:

you may disagree. and most commercials are not funny. this one even has things that don’t play at all. BUT i love the lines “i don’t know, is that a real sponsor?” … “gonna get stupid loose” and “mountain top!”

this best buy commercial:

“you bought the wrong tv, silly head.”

this clip from a league of their own:

i’m thankful

i’m thankful…

…for the blood of Christ.

…that God can transform regret over the past into peace in His promises.

…for faithful friends.

…for cooler weather (FINALLY.)

…for a loving family.

…that i’ve been reconciled to the Father through the Son

…that i’ve been tasked with a ministry of reconciliation.

…that i don’t play fantasy football for money.

…that i get to minister with and to great brothers and sisters in Christ.

…for laughter

…for the opportunities God has given me, despite myself, to take part in His kingdom work.

…for a church and pastor that are faithful to God’s Word.

…that God provided the opportunity for me to buy a house (at a ridiculous price) a little over a year ago.

…for chocolate pie (and a mom who makes it for me every year.)

…that the end of the semester is near (even if the end of my degree isn’t!)

…for good health.

…that i get to see my brother’s fam over Christmas… it’s been a while!

…for great memories of the aforementioned family, friends and ministry… i am beyond blessed!

mini like list 10.21.10 (HEB edition)

i didn’t plan on writing a like list but my recent trip to HEB demands one!

so here’s my “why i love HEB” mini like list:

-they have see-through egg cartons so you don’t have to open them to find out if any eggs are broken.

-blue bell’s caramel sundae crunch is BAAAACK! it’s been so long. (i realize this is not necessarily a reason to love HEB, but just go with it.)

-they have a coupon for a free box of HEB frosted flakes when you buy a box of kellogg’s frosted flakes. hello? this deal is awesome, especially considering i was gonna buy a box of HEB frosted flakes straight up. suckers.

-it’s from texas.

-no silly card to swipe. just lower prices. i think. i don’t really compare!

3, 2, 1 … list off

due to a need for content and the recent inspiration/reminder by my sister-in-law and her “good lists,” here’s a “good list” for you, quick six version:

witmygracesays (the twitter account my brother started where he posts things my niece, grace, says)

-blue bell’s “milk chocolate” ice cream (tastes like a wendy’s frosty)

-chick-fil-a’s honey roasted bbq sauce (SO good. also, looking forward to the chick-fil-a spicy chicken sandwich due next month.)

-volleyball nights are imminent

-david platt’s radical (well the first chapter, at least… that’s as far as i’ve read)

-got to go to radio music theatre the other night AND sat on the front row! (i laugh hard every time i go)

Thank You, 1985

i wanna give a shout out to the year 1985. it was, pop culturally, a really transformative year for me. not the actual year, per se, but what came forth from it. such as…

we are the world

i love the description on this particular youtube upload: “its by michael jackson and a couple of people. and its super touching :]”

compact discs

the dairy queen blizzard

the tv show growing pains

a ton of great movies, including a few of my absolute all-time faves:

spies like us

back to the future

the goonies

some killer cartoons:

and one of the biggest, eternally insignificant, influences of my entire life: the nintendo entertainment system

1985… my hat’s off to you. (readers, if you’re not standing and applauding by now, i worry about you and am sad for you.)

honorable mentions: microsoft windows 1.0 is released (figured that might draw some jeers), teen wolf, disney’s gummi bears, jem
